What's your movement?

What exactly is a movement?  I like to think that it is something bigger than “us.”

It goes beyond our scope and can have ripple effects throughout the world.  If we are going to create a movement I’d assume we are going to create one for the good of the planet and not the opposite.

Martin Luther King Jr did more than just fight for equality…it was the “Civil Rights movement.”

A guy in Iowa was looking for a clever column in the 1970’s for his newspaper.  He came up with this idea to ride his bike across the state and invite some friends.

Speed up to 2014 and I went on my first RAGBRAI a few weeks ago.  25,000 plus riders came together from all over the country and the world peacefully riding together and relying on the good nature of each other, the small towns, the farmers, and some prayers for “good weather!”

I’d say that guy in Iowa created a movement.  I didn’t realize just how big of one it was until I experienced it.  Go on RAGBRAI.

Hot Dog Month (yes you can watch them all HERE) wasn’t a movement in the same sense, but it was a fun way to make people laugh, smile, and maybe even learn a little bit.

In my eyes we all have an opportunity in our life to create a movement that we believe in.

What is your movement?  We are going to get to that and dig in more each and every week here.

But let’s start with this question…

“What is something that you have always wanted to build or create for the world?”

It’s probably something that once you mentioned to somebody they shot down with telling you it’s just not possible.

I’m not buying that and neither should you.  A guy in Iowa created RAGBRAI, a pastor in Alabama created the Civil Rights Movement, I was able to create a free youth basketball camp that has a 40 person waiting list in its first year and something we only promoted for four days.

Your movement can be created.  Start with the question I asked above and we’ll get going more next week on this.

I’ll leave you with this quote from Margaret Mead to get you thinking that it can be done…

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Carpe Diem!
