Personal What

It's just about being your goofy, authentic, value driven self.

Personal What?!

It’s been quite some time that I have spoken about personal branding.  And that’s primarily because of the loads of programs (I created one way back when ha!), resources, and opinions on the matter.

I’m back with a post on this topic because I have learned something about personal branding. Can you be a person and a brand at the same time?  That’s the question we are going for here.
I spoke in my first two books about how personal branding is about finding a story that makes you different and unique than everyone else in the world and then finding a way to share that story and give value to people around that story.

You definitely still need to be unique and have a value driven proposition for why somebody should work with you. But more importantly than that I think personal branding is becoming a bit more about drawing a line in the proverbial sand.

If you are a person you get to have feelings, emotions, obstacles, happiness and grief.  If you are a brand you most likely get to have profit margins, balance sheets, sales numbers, prospecting tactics, and marketing strategies.

How do you combine the two of them? I think we get to stop overthinking personal branding. Personal what? It even kind of sounds weird.  It’s an important thing to have but the steps that are taken to creating one don’t need to be so mundane and crazy.

Figure out what you stand for, how you help people, what value you offer, and just go and start doing it. Your personal brand is your reputation.  Stand up for what you believe in without being an A hole about it and give love and energy on a high level.
If you are reasonably priced for the value you offer, you hustle and grind, and your reputation speaks for itself that is all the personal branding strategies you need.  It will be created without you having to focus time and energy about it.

Stop caring about your personal brand, start focusing on who you are as a person and a professional, and let the rest take care of itself.

We tend to overthink and overanalyze. I believe marketing should be fun because all things in life should be fun. Don’t sweat the small stuff and next thing you know when you get a new client and they mention you were hired because of the impact you are making in this world you might start thinking “personal what” instead of “personal brand.”
